    Movie Reviews: District 9

So this past weekend I watched District 9 with a few friends of mine and I was surprised at how good it was. Sitting at around 88% on rottentomatoes.com, District 9 offers sci-fi junkies everything they would want. It has tons of action; it keeps you on the edge of your seat most of the time and in the end you just want more. In my personal opinion, this is the best movie so far this summer.

This Peter Jackson production sets place not in the USA, where most movies take place, but in Johannesburg, South Africa. As the introductory news footage will tell you, a large group of aliens have been living in an isolated camp called District 9 for the past twenty years. This is a slum, where there are gang violence, prostitution and illegal arms trades. There are no rules or regulations within the camp, aliens are eating junk off the floor, trading their advanced weaponry for food, stealing, and they are being treated like scum. The main character was a government official whose job was to serve the aliens an eviction notice to relocate them. Being followed around by a camera crew, the audience can see what kind of place these aliens live in, and how the locals as well as the government treat them. He is forced to run from the government though, as an unlikely turn of events has him joining forces with an alien named Christopher and their quest to retrieve an item that he had originally confiscated. The movie overall is great, at no point you will think the aliens are CG and there is a ton of great action, which I think is better than anything we’ve seen this summer.
